Also called Lehsunia stone/ Vaiduryam stone/ Vaiduria in Hindi, the Cat’s eye is a valuable gem belonging to the chrysoberyl mineral family. It is known for its unique optical phenomenon called chatoyancy resembling the slit eye of a cat, hence the name. As per studies, the chatoyancy effect in an original cat's eye stone is the direct result of parallel fibrous or needle-like inclusions, which interact with light in such a way that appears as if a distinct line or band of light is moving across the surface of the stone. The intensity and color of the cat's eye stone effect can vary depending on the mineral composition, with the finest specimens displaying a sharp and vivid band of light.
